About tulum
Tulum is a town on the Caribbean coastline of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. It’s known for its beaches and well-preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city. The main building is a large stone structure called El Castillo (castle), perched on a rocky cliff above the white sand beach and turquoise sea. Near the ruins is the Parque Nacional Tulum, a coastal area with mangroves and cenotes (natural limestone sinkholes).
You will love Tulum because it’s still raw, unlike other over-developed tourist resorts in Mexico. The downtown is very local-centric and with a friendly, relaxed vibe. Have breakfast on the upper terrace and then head to town to rent bicycles (in town) for the duration of your stay. Take a ride via the bike path from Aldea Zuma to one Tulums beautiful beaches. The large walking beach at Las Palmas is a great place to start, or visit several of the other smaller unique spots such as La Zebra, Ziggy’s Beach, Posada Margherita or Mivida. Mezzanine has wonderful coffee and your table is overlooking the beach from their mezzanine. In the evenings you might like to try to one of several restaurants in town, with the romantic ambiance, local music and the liveliness of travellers mingling of the locals.

Mivida Restaurant & Beach Club
Every time we go to Tulum we explore, on one of our bike trips we discovered this little restaurant on a more secluded part of the waterfront. We think the food is terrific and the beach with their loungers are great. The place has so much character. Worth an afternoon or two.
The Beach at Playa las Palmas
We love walking this beach since it is really long and offers varied views from the Tulum archeological site to a rocky inlet at the other end. In between there are many deserted spots, high end restaurants such as Mezzanine as well as many small wonderful bars and restaurants. At Playa Paraiso we can relax under an umbrella on a lounge chair or a table, have really fresh fish and watch the day go on. But many times we enjoy the small Bohemian spots along the walk instead.
Taqueria Honorio Restaurant
What an experience to be had of the local Yucatan specialties. Check out the Cochinita Pibil dishes. It’s authentic and delicious. Lunch time is busy, but the communal tables come up very quickly. Downtown Tulum
El Asadero Restaurant
It’s a great place to go if you are hungry and not a vegetarian. It’s a Mexican Argentinian steak restaurant. Downtown Tulum, make reservations. Really great flavours!
Posada Margherita Italian Restaurant & Beach
Another wonderful little discovery. Riding a bicycle and stopping at all the different spots really reveals some great treasures. The beach and the food is wonderful. This place is great!
Dos Ojos Cenote
One of our favourite experiences with the most amazing scuba diving. Cenotes / Caverns / Caves are found all over the Riviera Maya, near Playa Del Carmen and Tulum. The name means "two eyes " in English and there may not be a better way to describe this magical dive site. The setting is perfect as you walk a short distance through the jungle to the rather large hidden away cenote.
